En re: the word “charity” in the el reg article: I read it as an insult, and in contrast with a systemic donation flow like “taxes”.

“Charity” implies that the donations are voluntary, fickle, self-interested. Imagine Google donating once a year to a cause but stopping if the recipient is insufficiently grateful or does something the Goog doesn’t like with the money.

Tax ‘em instead. No choice, and you’d come closer to making the tech giants pay for the value they get from open source.
