What I love most about news that Allo is shutting down is that I had no idea what Allo was in the first place.
(Answer: it was yet another Google chat service.)
@ceejbot it was FaceTime
@reconbot @ceejbot It is part of the just announced lucky 4, for now... https://www.blog.google/products/messages/latest-messages-allo-duo-and-hangouts/
@ceejbot Allo uses the Signal protocol which is a boon. It seems odd that Google would spend a bunch of money creating Allo then spend what appears to be zero effort promoting it. The only mentions I’d see of Allo before today appeared to be sourced from Signal’s blog.
@mkb Google historically has a problem with writing new chat services instead of improving or marketing their existing services.
@ceejbot Fear not, three more shall spring up to take its place. (No, I cannot understand Google's obsession with developing 10+ not-quite-feature-overlapping chat systems simultaneously either)
@ceejbot it had significantly better video than Hangouts and dialer integration
